En principio hago películas para sobrevivir. Hacer películas es un trabajo como otros. Yo empecé muy de a poco a hacer películas. Antes de ello comencé trabajando en telenovelas. En Hong Kong el cine comercial tiene una gran presencia por lo que, siendo muy joven, comencé trabajando en los grandes estudios de Cinema City. Y si bien durante esos 7 años en los que trabajé en TV tenía ofrecimientos para dirigir cine, internamente sentía que todavía no estaba preparado, que aún no era el momento. En 1978 dirigí mi primera película The Enigmatic Case (Bi shui han shan duo ming jin, 1980), pero enseguida me di cuenta que no estaba listo, no me sentía aún como un verdadero director de cine. Así que desde esa primera experiencia pasaron 7 años hasta que en 1986 dirigí mi segunda película Seven Years Itch (Qi nian zhi yang, 1987). Fue allí cuando comprendí que lo que realmente me gusta del cine es el hecho que es algo se va aprendiendo mientras se hace, trabajando, paso a paso. Entonces desde 1986 hasta 1992 hice películas, pero por esos años me di cuenta también que mi cine era demasiado comercial, y que si quería dirigir era requisito convocar actores y actrices estrellas, donde un poco son ellos quienes mandan. Entonces empecé a preguntarme si era así como debía seguir mi carrera, toda mi trayectoria. Entonces cree Milky Way Image Company, mi propia productora, con la cual me propuse perseverar y hacer películas como un proceso original, algo personal, del propio director. Y claro, también me permitía manejar los tiempos de mi producción, porque hacer una película tiene algo que me fascina y que necesito estar haciéndolo. Si no estoy en un rodaje y estoy en casa, a los dos días no sé qué hacer. En esos momentos mi esposa me reta y me dice “¿por qué no vas a trabajar?”.

First of all I film to survive. Making movies is like any other job. I started little by little. Before filming I worked in soap operas. In Hong Kong the commercial cinema has a great presence; therefore, being young I started working in the grand studios of Cinema City. Even though during those seven years, I had worked for TV, I had received offers for directing cinema, internally I felt I wasn’t prepared, it just wasn’t my moment yet. In 1978 I directed my first movie, The Enigmatic Case (Bi shui han shan duo ming jin, 1980), right away I noticed I wasn’t ready, I didn’t feel like a real movie director. So seven years past after my first experience until I directed my second movie in 1986, Seven Years Itch (Qi nian zhi yang, 1987). There I comprehended that what I really liked about cinema was the fact that you learn something while doing it, working, step by step. So from 1986 to 1996 I made movies, but during those years I noticed that my movies were too commercial, and if I wanted to direct I had to hire stars, and they were kind of the bosses. So then I asked myself if that was the way I wanted my career to continue. That´s when I created, Milky Way Image Company, my own production company, which allowed me to preserve and make movies with a more original process, something more personal, owned by the director , in a way. And of course, that allowed me to manage my schedules, because making a movie has something that fascinates me and I need to be doing. If I´m not shooting, and I´m at home, after two days I don’t know what to do. At that moment my wife nags me and says: “Why don’t you go to work?”.
