Esta es una pregunta realmente estúpida, como la de Cahiers du Cinéma. No tengo ni idea.
¿Por qué filmo? ¿Por el dinero? No. Estoy haciendo esto por nada. ¿Para el arte? No. El cine ya no es un arte desde hace cincuenta años. ¿Porque es la mejor manera que conozco de comunicarme? ¿Porque dirigir es un auténtico curso intensivo de megalomanía? ¿Porque es una manera genial de conocer a Béatrice Dalle? Esta es una pregunta muy difícil. Es como preguntar: “¿Por qué tienes sexo?” Además, probablemente esa sea la respuesta. Por supuesto que no es como hacer el amor. Pero quizá es lo que viene a continuación en el orden de los placeres. (1)

This is a really stupid question, like the one in Cahiers du Cinéma. I have no idea.
Why do I film? For the money? No. I’m doing this for nothing. For art? No. Cinema hasn’t been an art form for fifty years. Because it’s the best way I know to communicate? Because directing is a real crash course in megalomania? Because it’s a great way to meet Béatrice Dalle? This is a very difficult question. It’s like asking, «Why do you have sex?» Besides, that’s probably the answer. Of course, it’s not like making love. But maybe it’s the next best thing in the order of pleasures. (1)
