No sé de otros cineastas, pero yo practico una forma desorganizada de hacer cine. La mecánica de preproducción me aburre, pero el rodaje y la edición me excitan, es allí donde mi creatividad se libera.
Seguramente escribo un guión y a veces aún dibujo un story board, pero es todo con el propósito de conseguir el dinero para hacer una película, de otra modo no seguiría un guión –un tratamiento tal vez, una sinopsis sería aún mejor–. Pero sin un guión, mi set es por lo general un caos, los actores no saben qué hacer, el equipo tiene dudas y a veces ni yo sé que está pasando. ¡Pero esa es mi musa!
Dejo a las historias surgir de la locación y la cultura de dónde y de quién filmo. Me gusta crear diálogo con la locación. Es siempre mejor que lo que escribo en el guión. Siempre digo a los demás que mis películas salen mejor que mis guiones. Muchos se sorprenden porque esperan lo opuesto. Si tus guiones son mejores que tu película, entonces deberías ser escritor, no un cineasta.
También, me gusta asegurarme de que mis películas terminen siendo más inteligentes que yo. Así, la audiencia, junto con la película, se vuelven mis profesores. Ellos me dicen o me hacen preguntas que demuestran que poco sé de la vida y de lo que significa ser humano. Si uno es más inteligente que su película, entonces es un empresario, no un cineasta.
Pero, en última instancia, hago películas para satisfacer un impulso fundamental humano: el deseo insano de crear.

I don’t know about other filmmakers, but I practice a disorganized form of filmmaking. The mechanics of preparing for the film shoot bore me, but the shoot and the editing, is what excites me, it’s where my creativity is unleashed.
Sure, I write a screenplay and sometimes even draw storyboards, but its all for the sake of getting money to make a film, otherwise I rather not follow a script – a treatment maybe, a synopsis would be even better. But without a script, my set is usually in chaos, actors don’t know what they are doing, the crew is clueless and sometimes I don’t know what’s going on either. But that’s my muse!
I let the stories arise from the location and the culture of where and whom I film. I like to create dialog on location. It’s always better than what I write in the script. I tell others that my films always come out better than my scripts. Most are surprised because they expect the opposite. If your scripts are better than your film, then you should be a writer, not a filmmaker.
Also, I like to make sure that my films end up being smarter than I am. That way, the audience, along with the film, become my teachers. They tell me or ask me questions that show how little I know about life and what it means to be human. If you are smarter than your film, then you are a showman, not a filmmaker.
But, ultimately, I make films to satisfy a fundamental human urge – the insane desire to create.
