Hago películas para explorar mundos que quiero descubrir. Cuando se hace ficción he oído que lo mejor es cavar en uno mismo y revelar lo que uno sabe, pero haciendo documentales, prefiero examinar situaciones que ya no entiendo. Si yo filmara sabiendo exactamente cómo un acontecimiento pasará o cómo alguien hará algo, me preocuparía que la película perdiera el sentido de espontaneidad que amo en los documentales –ese sentimiento que independientemente es cristalizado en aquel momento exacto y si yo lo filmara otra vez, sería diferente–. El desafío en el montaje, entonces, es entender cómo transportar aquel mismo sentido de maravilla y sorpresa a una audiencia.

I make films to explore worlds I want to discover for myself. When creating fiction I have heard it’s best to delve into yourself and reveal what you know, but when creating documentaries, I prefer to examine situations I don’t already understand. If I were to film knowing exactly how an event will happen or how someone will do something, I’d worry that the film would lose the sense of spontaneity that I love in documentaries –that feeling that whatever it is crystallized at exactly that moment and if I were to film it again, it would be different–. The challenge in editing, then, is to figure out how to convey that same sense of wonder and surprise back to an audience.
