Hoy hago cine para recordarme a mí mismo y a otros aficionados que hay muchas cosas más importantes que las películas. ¿Pero cómo expresar mejor este deseo? Hacer películas, ver películas, leer textos como este, es un privilegio, incluso un lujo, insondable para la mayoría de la población mundial. Es mi amor duradero, y de alguna forma inexplicable, el medio que me continúa impulsando a no abandonarlo pero comprometerlo en la batalla. Mientras cada película posee sus propias “leyes de gravedad”, para hacer “despegar de la tierra” cualquier proyecto debe ser propulsado por alguna urgencia. Armado con este combustible (ira más a menudo que una fuerza motivadora detrás del trabajo), busco una expresión para estos fuertes impulsos aún incoados. Como Straub bien lo dijo, “la lucha entre la idea y el problema, y la lucha con el problema, da a luz a la forma”. En esa búsqueda, intento intuir la belleza a lo largo del camino. Haciendo esto, se convierte en uno de los medios a través de los cuales asumo mi responsabilidad social. Estoy convencido que el cine me ofrece una voz más rica, más resonante y de mayor alcance que la que yo proyecto como orador o escritor.
También hago películas para ser un mejor cineasta.

Today I make films to remind myself and other filmgoers that there are a lot more important things than films. But how best to express this desire? Making films, watching films, reading texts such as this, is a privilege, a luxury even, unfathomable for much of the world’s population. It is my abiding and still somewhat inexplicable love for the medium that continues to propel me not to abandon it but rather to engage it in struggle. While each film possesses its own creative ‘laws of gravity’, to lift any project off the ground it must be propelled by some sort of urgency. Armed with this fuel (anger more often than not being a motive force behind the work), I seek an expression for these strong yet inchoate impulses. As Straub puts it well, “the struggle between the idea and the matter, and the struggle with the matter, gives rise to the form.” In that search, I try to intuit beauty along the way. While doing so is but one of the means by which I assume my social responsibility. I am convinced that cinema affords me a voice richer, more resonant, and further reaching than the one I project as a speaker or writer.
I also make films in order to get better at making films.
