Hace muchos años escuché a alguien decir que el documentalista debe poner el trípode en el barro. No recuerdo quién lo dijo, ni dónde lo escuché, pero es una imagen que todavía conservo en mi mente y tengo bastante presente.
Creo que filmo, sobre todas las cosas, porque me gusta poner el trípode en el barro, mirar hacia donde muchas veces la gente no quiere mirar, trabajar desde la incomodidad de los lugares, enfrentarme a la apasionante incertidumbre de la realidad.
Debo reconocer que algunas veces, después de un rodaje, agotado, sucio, con dolor de cabeza, mal comido, mal dormido, me he preguntado en un tono negativo por qué filmo, quién me manda a hacerlo, qué sentido tiene.
También reconozco que después de esos planteos trasnochados, al día siguiente, si me tengo que levantar a las 4 AM para ir a una nueva jornada, lo hago sin chistar y con sumo placer.
El rodaje, tal vez no sea la etapa que más disfruto de la realización de una película en comparación a la calma y el silencio de la escritura. Pero disfruto mucho cuando las cosas salen bien, cuando el caos se ordena aunque sea un poquito, cuando la realidad te hace un guiño y te regala una escena impensada. También disfruto aquellas pequeñas cosas: el brillo en los ojos de los personajes, la puerta que se abrió en el momento justo, el tipo que salió de cuadro por donde tenía que salir, la batería que aguantó hasta el final de la entrevista.
Filmo por cada una de esas cosas y soy un agradecido de poder hacerlo. De que haya gente talentosa que se sume a esas movidas, de que haya gente con inquietudes dispuesta a pasar un rato mirando nuestras miradas.

Many years ago I heard someone that the documentary filmmaker should put the tripod on the mud. I don’t remember who say that or where I’ve heard it, but it is an image I still remember.
Above all things, I think I make films because I like to put the tripod on the mug, to look into those areas where many people don’t want to see, to work on the uncomfortable places, to confront the passionate uncertainty of reality.
I must admit that, after many shootings, when I’m exhausted, dirty, with a headache, without eating or sleeping, I ask myself in a negative way “why do I make films? Who makes me do this? What is the sense?”
I also admit that, after all those questions, if I have to get up the following day at 4AM, I do it without saying a word, truly happy.
The shooting maybe is not the part I enjoy the most, after the silence and the calm of writing the script. But I really enjoy when things go well, when chaos becomes a little more organized, when reality “winks me an eye” and a surprising scene appears. I also enjoy the little things: the bright on the eyes of the characters, the door that opens in the precise moment, the guy that went out of the frame in the correct place, the battery that was charged up to the end of the interview.
I make films because of all those things and I’m grateful for being able to do it, for the talented people that take part in every project, for the people interested in knowing my point of view.
