Hago películas –sobre todo– debido a una vieja cámara Súper 8 Bauer C14XL, aquella pequeña cámara negra con la que mi padre solía filmar nuestras vacaciones y actividades familiares. En esos tiempos, justo antes de la revolución del video casero, esto se hacía todavía con películas de celuloide y cada caja de película de tres minutos era bastante cara. Entonces mi padre hacía el ensayo antes de rodar para estar seguro que el timing era adecuado y que todo estaría en el foco y bien iluminado. Tanto mi familia como yo nos hicimos actores de nuestra propia película y mi padre un gran director.
Todo esto era mágico para mí y no podía soportar la espera hasta que recibíamos las películas “Kodak” en su característico sobre amarillo de algún lugar lejano (Suiza, supongo). Además, el tiempo de espera entre el rodaje y la proyección le daba más poder a este proceso misterioso.
Así, toda la familia pasaba parte de la tarde en la penumbra del living, gritando y riendo de nuestras propias imágenes y actuaciones. Yo amaba cada minuto de estos cortometrajes: la velocidad más rápida que la realidad, las luces brillantes y colores, el sonido del proyector.
Una vez mi padre me enseñó cómo poner la película en el proyector y cómo hacerlo lentamente al principio, para ayudarla a ir en la dirección correcta. Fue una verdadera ceremonia que me quitó el aliento. De repente, la película estaba entrando en el proyector con este sonido familiar y la luz blanca apareció en la pantalla en el medio del living, demostrando que la primera imagen estaba por aparecer.
Y en este tiempo efímero justo antes de nuestra película (cine), entendí que eso era lo que quería hacer… quería hacer películas.

I make movies –mostly– because of an old Bauer C14XL camera Super 8, that little black camera my father used to film our family holydays and activities. At this time, just before the homevideo rising, it was still celluloid films and each three minutes movie box was kind of expensive. So my father was making rehearsal before the shooting to be sure it was the good timing and that everything would be in focus and with the good light. So my family and I, we became actors of our own play, and my father a great director.
All this was magic to me and I couldn’t stand the waiting till we were receiving the «Kodak» films in their characteristic yellow enveloppes from somewhere far away (switzerland i guess). The time between the shooting and the screening was also giving more power to this mysterious process.
So, we were spending, the all family together, a part of the afternoon, in the twilight of the living room, laughing and shouting at our own images and performances. I loved every minutes of this short films : the speed faster than reality, the bright lights and colours, the sound of the projector.
Once, my father taught me how to put the film in the projector and how to do it soft speed at the begining to help the movie to go the right direction. It was a real ceremony and I was breathless. Suddenly, the film was getting inside the projector with this familiar noise and the white light appeared on the screen in the middle of the living room showing the first images were about to come.
And, in this flying time just before (our) moving pictures (cinema), I understood iit’s what I wanted to do… I wanted to do movies.
