Escribir me salvó la vida. No sé exactamente de qué, pero sé que lo hizo; en lo más profundo de mi ser comprendo que es verdad. Sé que me alejó de algo primordial y oscuro, centrado en la muerte, antes de que pudiera entenderlo íntimamente, y me llevó hacia algo maravilloso, significativo y vivo. Siempre. Hacer cine fue el vehículo a través del cual este acto de salvar vidas se sintió más vivo, más tangible, como si pudiera sostener un corazón que latía en mis propias manos y sentir su vida palpitante momento a momento. Y lo hermoso fue que el corazón estaba a salvo incluso cuando sentía que no debería estarlo, y que podía encontrar a otras personas que querían sostenerlo conmigo. Hacer cine en su mejor momento se siente así: un grupo de personas que llevan esta fuerza, esta energía, juntas. Después de experimentar esto, no hay vuelta atrás para vivir sin ello.

Writing saved my life. I don’t know exactly from what, but I know it did; in my marrow I understand this to be true. I know it led me away from something primordial and dark, death-centered, before I could understand it intimately, and towards something wonderful, meaningful, and alive. Always. Filmmaking was the vessel through which this life-saving act felt the most alive, the most tangible, like I was able to hold a beating heart in my own hands and feel its throbbing life moment by moment. And the beautiful part was that the heart was safe even when it felt like it shouldn’t be, and that I could find others who wanted to hold it with me. Filmmaking at its best feels like that: A group of people carrying this force, this energy, together. After you experience this, there’s no going back to living without it.
