¿Por qué hago películas? ¿Por qué filmo? Bueno, pasé la mayoría de mi vida en el cine. Desde que era chico, en 1953-54, me fasciné viendo la película de Disney “20000 leagues under the sea” (20.000 leguas de viaje submarino) y “The naked jungle” (Marabunta), la versión producida por George Pal. Luego crecí amando cualquier tipo de fantasía, horror, y ciencia ficción, hasta que decidí que, siguiendo ese estilo, era hora de hacer mis propias películas.
Entonces en el colegio empecé a dibujar comics con estilo de películas e storyboards con mi lápiz. Luego pasé a una cámara de 8mm, hasta que en la secundaria empecé a filmar a mis novias convenciéndolas de mostrarlas como si fueran estrellas de Hollywood.
Luego comencé como asistente de cámara de 16mm y 35mm en el mundo profesional publicitario y, finalmente, empecé como sincronizador, asistente de edición, y dialoguista, llegando a ser un joven director. En 1968 hice algunos cortos y mi primer largometraje de ciencia ficción: “The tunnel under the world” (El túnel bajo el mundo). A partir de allí despegó mi carrera como guionista y director.
En 1970 me hice amigo de Dario Argento y, poco después y siendo muy afortunado, comencé a trabajar con él en una producción de Paramount: “4 flies on grey velvet” (Cuatro moscas de terciopelo gris, 1971). Mientras tanto y después también escribí muchos artículos y libros sobre las películas que amo, también creé festivales de cine aquí, en Italia, e incluso me convertí en gerente de una sala de cine en Roma.
En los setenta, mientras dirigía mis propias películas, formé una distribuidora cinematográfica de películas de ciencia ficción vintage y, a fines de los 80, con mi amigo Argento abrimos “Profondo Rosso”, una tienda dedicada al merchandising de películas de fantasía, incluyendo un “Museo del Horror” en el que los fans pueden visitar los calabozos.
Sí, hice todo eso, y gracias a Dios, lo sigo haciendo, pero solo en el campo de la fantasía, porque pertenezco allí: siendo pequeño descubrí películas y literatura de ciencia ficción, horror y fantasía.

Why do I make films? | Why do I film? Well, I spent most of my life in the movies, since as a child, back in 1953-54, I became fascinated watching in a theatre Disney’s 20000 leagues under the sea and that produced by George Pal’s The naked jungle. Then I grew up loving all kinds of fantasy, horror and sci-fi movies, till I decided I had to make my own movies of this kind too!
So early at school I started drawing movie-like comics and storyboards with my pencil. Then moved to an 8mm, camera, till at high school I started to film my girlfriends, compelling them to appear as they were Hollywood actresses.
Then I started as an assistant to the 16mm and 35mm advertising professional world and finally started as an synch man, assistant editor, dialog writer on to young director, making in 1968 some shorts and my own first sci-fi full-length movie, The tunnel under the world… and so my professional career as screenplayer/director took off.
In 1970 I became friend with Dario Argento and soon after that I started to work with him too, beginning, me being very lucky, with a Paramount production (4 flies on grey velvet, 1971). But in the meantime and afterwards I also wrote many articles & books about the movies I do love, created film festivals here In Italy too and even became the manager of a movie house in Roma.
In the Seventies, while directing my own movies, I formed a vintage sci-fi movies theatrical distribution and at the end of the Eighties with my friend Dario Argento I’ve opened “Profondo Rosso”, a store fully dedicated to fantasy movie merchandise, with an “Horror Museum” that every fan can visit in its dungeons.
Yeah, I did all of this and, thanks God, I’m still doing it…but only in the fantasy field, because that’s where I do belong to, since as a child I discovered sci-fi, horror and fantasy literature and movies.
